Laboratories Ltd Abbott Laboratories Ltd. has been established in the UK for over 60 years, employing well over 1,000 people in the manufacture, distribution and marketing of a diverse range of high quality healthcare products. The Hospital Products Division was created in 1978 to meet the special needs of clinicians involved in anaesthesia and intensive care. More recently, to meet the needs of the changing NHS hospital environment, Abbott has established a specialised Business Unit dedicated to anaesthesia. A comprehensive portfolio of anaesthesia products include inhalational general anaesthetic agents, and a long-acting local anaesthetic agent. In addition Abbott has a strong tradition in the field of acute pain management which began with the launch of the Lifecare 4200 pump in 1988, and has continued in recent years with the launch of the Abbott Pain Manager (APM) pump in 1996 and in 2000 the introduction of the GemStar pump, the latest device in Abbott's Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pump technology.
